Peddling Perspectives

It was hard for Xiao Hong and me to accept Lionel’s genetic test results. We knew there was comfort in not knowing the future, but relying solely on hope wouldn’t help us find the right optometrists, support from other parents, or connections within the community. Still, when we got the news, it was tough to feel hopeful. We kept asking, "why?" But eventually, we shifted the gears in our minds from "why us" to "why don’t we do something," and taking action has made a big difference.

Life can be a lot like riding a bike, it can be tough to start and find the right balance. While you’re going uphill it takes a lot of effort to make a little progress. But if you keep going, you'll realize it's not all uphill. There are times when you're zooming downhill or cruising on flat ground. Better yet is when you realize you even enjoy the challenge of “the climb” and the personal satisfaction that comes from cresting the hill.

Raising a blind son isn’t always difficult, some days go smoothly. Small challenges like putting the right amount of toothpaste on a toothbrush or navigating steps are minor hills we can handle without losing much momentum. I know there will be struggles, especially in school, where educational experts estimate 80% of learning happens through vision. While Lionel’s limited eyesight is a hindrance, I don’t like to call it a disability. Lionel has differbilities. While I doubt he’ll ever have photographic memory, he seems to have the auditory equivalent. He can recall long stories from his favorite podcasts or books after hearing them just once. I have to be careful with my word choice around him, especially when I stub my toe. Also, Lionel can now read 50 words in braille – how many people do you know who can do that?

Whatever challenges lie ahead, our father-son team have got our feet strapped to the pedals and we will ride with it.
